Everyone is talking about AI.

But the reality is, most people don’t have a clue what AI is or what all the hype is about. Hopefully this post will help sort things out for you. So hang on to your hats while we dive in.

The AI Revolution

First… why all the hype now? AI has been around for years.

In Nov 2022, ChatGPT was released to the public and caught the attention of much of the tech world with it’s stunning capabilities.

The AI technology behind ChatGPT is not new. But like Netscape Navigator, the browser that stormed the world in the mid-1990s opening up the internet to the world, ChatGPT’s simplicity and power is propelling the adoption of AI as an everyday tool.

The impact that AI will bring to society and our economy is being compared to that of the PC, the internet & the smartphone.

ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman and several other leading technologists in 2015. Initially a non-profit, in 2019 OpenAI converted to a for-profit and since then Microsoft has invested millions into the company, as one its largest shareholders. ChatGPT can be accessed via the web and in June of 2023, OpenAI released an iPhone app accessible from the Apple App Store.

ChatGPT is the most discussed AI chatbot, but there is a world of chatbots being developed, which we’ll cover below.

The Whole Picture – Types of AI

Let’s back up for a minute and explore some definitions and types of AI.

AI, short for Artificial Intelligence, is the science of making machines “smart” and enabling them to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. It’s like giving machines a brain of their own. AI encompasses a wide range of technologies, such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics.

Machine Learning – One of the key aspects of AI is machine learning (ML). Think of it as the sidekick that helps machines learn from data and make predictions or decisions. ML algorithms analyze vast amounts of information and detect patterns that humans might miss. They can predict the weather, recommend movies, or even beat grandmasters at chess.

Natural Language Processing – Ever wondered how Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant understand your commands? That’s where natural language processing (NLP) comes in. NLP teaches machines to understand and interpret human language, enabling them to chat with us, provide information, and even crack a few jokes. Just be careful not to hurt their feelings – they’re sensitive souls!

Computer Vision – You know those machines that can identify faces, objects, and even read street signs? Well, they owe their superpower to computer vision. This AI branch enables machines to see and interpret visual data, just like our own eyes do. They can analyze images, recognize people, and assist in various fields like self-driving cars, surveillance, and medical imaging. These machines truly have an eye for detail!

Robotics – Ah, robots! They’re not just characters in sci-fi movies; they’re real-life assistants that AI has brought to our doorstep. Robotics combines AI, mechanical engineering, and electronics to create intelligent machines that can perform tasks autonomously or alongside humans. From vacuum-cleaning robots to advanced humanoid machines, they’re here to lend a helping hand – or maybe a robotic arm.

AI Tools for Consumers – Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s dive into some major AI tools that consumers can use today:

  1. Chatbots: Have you ever visited a website and had a little pop-up box asking if you need assistance? That’s often a chatbot! These conversational AI agents help answer queries, guide users, and even provide recommendations. They’re like customer support, minus the hold music.
  2. Virtual Assistants: You’ve probably interacted with these chatty pals before – Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. These virtual assistants use NLP to understand your voice commands and perform tasks like setting reminders, playing music, or answering questions.
  3. Image Recognition Apps: Have you ever used an app that identifies plants, recognizes dog breeds, or scans barcodes? These apps use computer vision to analyze images and provide relevant information. They’re like your personal visual encyclopedia, but without the dusty pages.
  4. AI-Powered Recommendations: Whether you’re shopping online or binge-watching shows, AI-powered recommendation systems are there to help. They analyze your behavior, preferences, and patterns to suggest products, movies, or music tailored just for you. They’re like personal shoppers, minus the judgmental glares.

What is Generative Artificial Intelligence?

Chat GPT is what is known as Generative Artificial Intelligence or Generative AI.

Generative AI tools use simple text or audio input in natural language to answer any question with a response written in easily readable language. Microsoft released a new version of Bing with ChatGPT at its core, redesigning search around this natural language interface.

Generative AI has applications in various fields, including art, design, content creation, and data synthesis. It can be used to generate realistic images, create new music compositions, generate realistic text, assist in content creation for video games or movies, and much more. However, it’s important to note that generative AI also raises ethical considerations, such as potential misuse, copyright infringement, and deepfake creation.

What are the generative AI tools available to consumers today?

We are witnessing an explosion of AI tools across all types of content, from text & stories, to images, videos, computer code and more. Here are a few of the most popular tools:

ChatGPTOpenAI’s ChatGPT generates text based content to create stories, articles, and answer just about any question you have in natural language. GPT-3 is a language-based generative AI model used for chatbots, content generation, and creative writing assistance. GPT-3 can generate coherent and contextually relevant text based on prompts provided by users.
Dall-EDALL·E, created by OpenAI, merges generative AI and deep learning to transform textual descriptions into mind-boggling visualizations. Users can describe their ideas, and DALL·E will bring them to life with stunning and surreal images that stretch the boundaries of imagination.
RunwayMLUnleash your imagination with RunwayML, a user-friendly platform that lets you experiment and deploy various generative AI models. From creating stunning images to synthesizing captivating music, RunwayML is a gateway to an AI-powered wonderland.
ArtBreederWith ArtBreeder, users become artists of infinite possibilities. This online tool allows them to blend and evolve existing images, resulting in awe-inspiring digital art that combines imagination and AI.
DeepDreamDeepDream, developed by Google, takes users on a surreal adventure. This tool transforms ordinary images into mesmerizing hallucinatory landscapes, allowing users to tap into the power of deep neural networks and imagination.
