The AI Revolution

First… why all the hype now? AI has been around for years.

In Nov 2022, ChatGPT was released to the public and caught the attention of much of the tech world with it’s stunning capabilities.

The AI technology behind ChatGPT is not new. But like Netscape Navigator, the browser that stormed the world in the mid-1990s opening up the internet to the world, ChatGPT’s simplicity and power is propelling the adoption of AI as an everyday tool.

The impact that AI will bring to society and our economy is being compared to that of the PC, the internet & the smartphone.

ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman and several other leading technologists in 2015. Initially a non-profit, in 2019 OpenAI converted to a for-profit and since then Microsoft has invested millions into the company, as one its largest shareholders. ChatGPT can be accessed via the web and in June of 2023, OpenAI released an iPhone app accessible from the Apple App Store.

ChatGPT is the most discussed AI chatbot, but there is a world of chatbots being developed, which we’ll cover below.

The Whole Picture – Types of AI

Let’s back up for a minute and explore some definitions and types of AI.

What is Generative Artificial Intelligence?

Chat GPT is what is known as Generative Artificial Intelligence or Generative AI.

Generative AI tools use simple text or audio input in natural language to answer any question with a response written in easily readable language. Microsoft released a new version of Bing with ChatGPT at its core, redesigning search around this natural language interface.

Generative AI has applications in various fields, including art, design, content creation, and data synthesis. It can be used to generate realistic images, create new music compositions, generate realistic text, assist in content creation for video games or movies, and much more.
